Domingo Rodríguez ‘El Colorao’ and Toñin Corujo bring this show into being, which will feature performances by the Corujo family, as well as the Toñin Corujo Quartet.

The show, Universo Coloraowill take place at the Jameos del Agua auditorium on 8 September. This musical adventure, devised by Lanzarote musician Toñin Corujo, combines Canarian roots music with fresh universal tendencies. As his cornerstone, Corujo draws on the relentless investigation and revival of popular Canarian music undertaken by timple artist Domingo Rodríguez, ‘El Colorao’ from Fuerteventura,

Toñin Corujo reveals the driving force behind the project. “I’ve known Domingo ‘El Colorao’ for years and, apart from being an incredible musician, he has another, lesser-known talent: he’s also a storyteller. “He has written some wonderful couplets that deserve to be heard,” the musician points out. Having said that, we felt that they should not just be shown in the traditional sense, but wanted to give them a twist and some fusion. Our culture is a pure fusion of cultures, ideas and universal feelings, and we wanted to reflect this in this performance.

Domingo himself has joined us. “We played together years ago and it had been a while since we work together, and Toñin came up with Universo Colorao. I think this also came from the rhymes, couplets and poems that he has seen me writing and sharing on social media. Our idea is to produce a collective story with all of this… a fusion of my work and that of Toñin’s band. Well, actually it’s not just us, in reality the Corujo family will be there in force, so it’s going to be a revival of music and words.”

The power of words

This performance is a meticulous debut of the less well-known side of ‘EL Colorao’, where his text, prose and couplets will grace the stage, as well as his music. “The audience will have a rich sensory experience, with musicians that have evolved in different disciplines and who will add music to to Domingo’s couplets, and also to those composed by Víctor Fernández Gopar. We’ll take our own musical roots to another level. A traditional show, whilst also slightly unconventional,” explains Corujo.

The Corujo family, music in their blood.

To make all of this possible, “we’ll be gathering musicians and singers from a range of disciplines, with Domingo ‘El Colorao’, the best timple player in the Canary Islands, with Francisco Corujo, an internationally recognised tenor with a meteoric career; a versatile singer, if there ever was one, who has never forgotten his roots: we can see him singing at an opera in Milan, or with a traditional folkloric performance at a street party.” Toñin explains. ”Ciro Corujo, another remarkable singer, will also be joining us. Ciro has sang on international tours with the best traditional, and not so traditional groups, of our islands including the Sabadeños, the Gofiones among others.

And not only those. “Antonio Corujo will also perform. What can I say about him? He’s my father, but also a prominent figure when we talk about our music, couplets, and the fusion of cultures and history. Someone who has known how to stay true to folklore and how to incorporate foreign cultures and make them his own. Then we have Domingo Corujo, who is my brother and another magnificent musician. He plays the timple, the guitar and in this show he will perform as a percussionist. The Toñin Corujo Quartet will form the final piece of the jigsaw, with Israel Curbelo on cajón flamenco and piano, Yarel Hernández on the guitar, bass and double base; Carlos Pérez on tenor and soprano saxophone and myself, on the timple. I can only say that they are an extraordinary bunch of musicians. Each one comes from different styles, from jazz to heavy metal, but can adapt to any style. They’re geniuses!”

New music potential

In the midst of these well-known musicians will be a new promise, Nestor Castro Corujo, who’ll also take part in the performance. “my school has always held the conviction that if we want first-class performers in any artistic discipline, we have to nurture our own talent base. Néstor became a student at the school from a young age, and he’s still really young, but he already has a very strong musical culture. He studies piano at the school and has also studied the timple. He´ll be playing lapas (shells used as percussion instruments) in this show, the keyboard and also different sound effects.

A unique approach

This is a distinct and innovative, and somewhat ambitious, experience for both musicians.” We’ve tried to leave the stereotypes behind in this performance. As I said before, music is universal, but we must stay true to our roots. When the composer, the performer, creates or plays, he is fuelled by emotions, experiences and feelings. Every musician has his own baggage, because to be able to create, you have to be a sensitive soul,” Corujo affirms. “They’ve drilled into us what we have to listen to, to read, to eat or to think, but I still believe that all humans are different, something that I strongly support, and I want to reflect this in my performances.”
