Exposition 100 years: Lanzarote and César
01-05-2019 | 10:00 @ 31-10-2019 | 20:00
In 1923, Domingo Doreste «Fray Lesco» started his diary entry about a trip to Lanzarote with this sentence, «Except for cases when there is need or convenience, I doubt there will be many who will go to Lanzarote unless they are required to do so».
Almost a hundred years later, the tourism and cultural success of the Islands, and the three million tourists who visit the island every year, incite us to take a deeper look into the transformations, reinventions and findings of a land that is, without a doubt, seen by everyone as a role model when it comes to island progress.
In 1919 César Manrique was born. He was an agent of change and a leading character with a key role in the renovation of Lanzarote. Among the events to mark the hundred-year birth anniversary of the artist, The exhibition 100 years: Lanzarote and César will aim to provide a broader vision of this hundred-year story: from wooden windmills to wind farms, from its salt mines to its tourists, from camels to electric bicycles, from fishermen to surfers.
The dryness of the land of Lanzarote, its rough looking landscape and its weather, haven’t stopped the island from having had some of the most important intellectual and aesthetic adventures of the 20th Century in the Canary Islands: not only César Manrique, but also Manolo Millares, Agustín Espinosa, Manuel Padorno and Rafael Arozarena contributed to the provision of a full picture of the Islands by building around a metaphysical Lanzarote. The science, technology, social processes, tourism, research and sustainable progress are some of the main areas of analysis of this project. Indeed, Lanzarote is an island that is able to draw many to look its way. That was how «Fray Lesco» saw it in his narration of his journey, some pages later, when he started to discover one of the keys of the magnificent beauty of the Island: He wrote, «In Lanzarote», «the mountains seem content with their height».
