Casa Museo del Campesino

Traditional architecture, rural life and Fecundidad give shape to César Manrique’s tribute to Lanzarote’s farming knowledge. In patios, cisterns, threshing floors and wine presses, the Casa Museo shows how little rain, wind and volcanic soil shaped housing, farming and trades.

Traditional gastronomy

Casa Museo del Campesino Restaurant

The Casa Museo del Campesino Restaurant brings traditional Lanzarote cuisine into the same setting that explains the island’s rural life. Its proposal is based on local produce, Canarian recipes, artisan cheeses and wines with the Lanzarote Designation of Origin.

Origin

A project for looking at farming culture

In Mozaga, in the municipality of San Bartolomé, the Casa Museo del Campesino was born from César Manrique’s view of Lanzarote’s traditional architecture and rural life. The project began in 1968 as recognition of the knowledge of those who learned to inhabit and cultivate an island of little rain, wind and volcanic soil.

Architecture that brings together island solutions

The ensemble does not reproduce one specific house. It brings together patios, cisterns, threshing floors, wine presses and other elements found in different areas of Lanzarote to show how housing, farming work and trades were organised around water, climate and available resources.

Fecundidad and the landscape

Fecundidad, the sculpture with which Manrique linked the Centre to the island’s agricultural landscape, stands on the Peña de Tajaste. Set apart from the ensemble, the piece recalls the relationship between art, territory and farming culture.

What to see

  • Traditional architecture: patios, cisterns, threshing floors, wine presses, white walls and green woodwork show how traditional housing responded to Lanzarote’s climate, water and farming work.
  • Fecundidad: located on the Peña de Tajaste, César Manrique’s sculpture links the ensemble to the island’s agricultural landscape and to the farming culture that inspires the Centre.
  • Patios, threshing floors and cisterns: these spaces organised daily life and work, from threshing cereal to collecting and preserving water.
  • Path of tools and camel saddles: farming tools, camel saddles, a pajero and a soco help explain how produce was cultivated, transported and protected in Lanzarote’s countryside.
  • Plaza de los Artesanos: a space linked to Lanzarote’s traditional crafts, where craftsmanship forms part of the route through the island’s farming culture.

What to do

  • Tour the Casa Museo at your own pace: Cross patios, rooms and open spaces to understand how traditional architecture organised daily life, farming work and trades.
  • Visit the Plaza de los Artesanos: This space brings together traditional crafts from Lanzarote and lets you learn about pieces, techniques and materials linked to the island’s farming culture.
  • Check workshops and demonstrations: Some craft activities may vary according to the Centre’s programme, so it is worth checking availability during your visit.
  • Observe Fecundidad from different perspectives: César Manrique’s sculpture changes with distance and viewpoint, and helps read the relationship between art, landscape and farming culture.
  • Book a table at the restaurant: Complete your visit with Lanzarote cuisine based on local produce, traditional recipes, artisan cheeses and wines with the Lanzarote Designation of Origin.
